Deep Blue Bio is a transdisciplinary studio and research network designing with biological processes and complex living systems.

We move fluidly between lab, field, studio, and the materials kitchen — deepening connections between science, design, and technology.

Design provocations that prompt transitions.

Director & Studio Lead

Founded in 2024 by artist and materials scholar Kate Scardifield, Deep Blue Bio foregrounds creative practice within scientific research and expands the role of design in addressing ecological challenges.

The studio brings together scientists, artists, and technologists working at the forefront of sustainable innovation, new materials, and regenerative systems.

Our growing research network connects bio-driven design with technology transfer pathways, and links advanced fabrication with novel materials, systems transitions, and biomanufacturing.
